The first traces of human activity found in this place were concerned by historians to VI-V millennium BC - to the Middle Stone Age! However its present name this area has received much later - in the middle of the 16 century by the names of two objects: a big beautiful lake Lovozero and Sami (Lapps) settlement Lujavr-sijt (which means "a country churchyard Lovozero") located here.
The village Lovozero was founded in 1574. It stands on the both sides of the small river Virma flowing into the Lake Popovsky. Two lakes - Popovsky and Lovozero - are connected with a channel. Nowadays the village is an administrative centre of Lovozersky area. The population of the village is a little more than 3 thousand people. The Ponoy river with the length of 426 km is running here. Numerous shallow streams inflowing into Ponoy river are full of rapids. Large forests and hills with reindeer moss alternated with swampy lowlands, heaps of stones and poor vegetation.
The Lake Lovozero is the third largest lake of the Kola Peninsula. The surface of the lake is more than 200 square kilometers. There are more than one hundred islands on this huge lake which is stretched from the north to the south. The east shore of the lake is gently sloping and covered with the mixed wood. And its west shore outskirts with the abrupt spurs of Lovozersky Tundra mountains forming the fabulously beautiful landscapes.
